Sacred Heart Church, a tall and imposing edifice, located on Swami Vivekananda Road, SantaCruz, was officially opened and blessed on March 31, 1936.
The history of the Church goes back to the late 1850s. It was then, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, where Mass was celebrated only on Sundays. Gradually other sacraments like Baptism & Matrimony were administered.
As the Catholic community continued to grow. the need for a larger Church was felt. Fr. J. Alvares procured the land and decided to erect a building in honour of the Sacred Heart. Gigantic efforts were made to collect funds. This church is a monument of the generosity of Catholics all over India, Burma, Ceylon & Africa. Parishioners donated pews & statues. Much later the residence for the Priests was built.
Today, Sacred Heart Church stands tall not only in structure but in the development of the Catholic Church in Bombay. It has a community of 13,500 laity who are actively involved in several associations, some catering to the less privileged, others concerned with theological progress and the spiritual life of the people of God. |
